Ayurvedic Alchemy – Rasa Shastra

The word ‘Rasa’ denotes life and Shastra denotes rules or guidelines in a general sense. Rasa Shastra is Ayurveda’s Alchemy and teaches us how to promote, heal and uplift our life by using the natural resources given to us by mother earth. This class offers an understanding of Metallic substances, Compound minerals and Mother Natures’ properties that support Rasa Shastra. This class promotes and is presented in a Historical and Philosophical nature and is for enhancing the students Ayurvedic Education.

Metallic Substances: This group includes malleable metals such as gold, silver, copper, iron, lead, tin etc. and their uses as per Ayurveda. Then, we will learn about brittle metals such as zinc and arsenic and will dive in-depth knowledge about Mercury and Sulphur. Mercury was a highly favored metal from the Renaissance and beyond, while Sulphur was a persistent ingredient in nearly all the metallic preparations containing mercury.

Compound Minerals: This group includes Alum, Abhrak (Mica), Dagdi Hingolo (Red Sulfide of Mercury), etc. These are minerals which are in combination or aggregation with one another.

Saline Substances: This group includes numerous salts and alkaline preparations.

Natural Stones: These are preparations of lime, or of the calcareous family such as limestone, etc.

Natural Clays: The study of medicinal substances which may be enumerated from different clays.

Animal Products: In this group, we will learn about insects, milk, bile, honey etc. which are derived from animals and used in Ayurvedic medicines.

Sea Products: Conch Shell, Cowry Shell, pearl, coral etc. and their medicinal value in various Ayurvedic compounds.
