Spring 2021 – Rasa Shastra: Ayurvedic Alchemy

Rasa word denotes life. The science which teaches us how to promote, heal and uplift our life by using natural resources of mother earth is known as Rasa Shastra – Ayurvedic Alchemy. Ayurvedic Alchemy will include study of metallic substances, compound minerals, saline substances, natural stones, natural clays, animal products, and sea products, etc.

Metallic Substances: In this group, we are going to study malleable metals such as gold, silver, copper, iron, lead, tin etc. and their uses as per Ayurveda. Then, we will learn about brittle metals such as zinc and arsenic and will dive in-depth knowledge about Mercury and Sulphur.  Mercury was highly favorite metal from ages and majority of its prescriptions contain ‘Parad-Kajjali’ in some form or other. Sulphur was constant ingredient in nearly all the preparations which contain mercury.

Compound Minerals: This group includes Alum, Abhrak (Mica), Dagdi Hingolo (Red Sulfide of Mercury), etc. These are minerals which are in combination or aggregation with one another.

Saline Substances: This group includes numerous salts and alkaline preparations.

Natural Stones: These are preparation of lime or of calcareous family such as limestone. etc.

Natural Clays: Under this class, we will study medicinal substances which may be enumerated from different clays.

Animal Products: In this group, we will learn about insects, milk, bile, honey etc. which are derived from animals and used in Ayurvedic medicines.

Sea Products: Conch Shell, Cowry, pearl etc. can be included in this group and we will study how these materials are used as Ayurvedic medicines.

Note: If a student is enrolled in the Ayurvedic Practitioner or Advanced Ayurvedic Practitioner Program, the tuition fee for this class is NOT included in the program fee. This is a separate class for the sake of knowledge only.
