Spring 2020- Nighantu: Advanced Ayurvedic Herbal Studies

In Nighantu: Advanced Ayurvedic Herbal Studies, students will focus on over 70+ herbs covered in classical Nighantu texts. While still abundant, many of these herbs have fallen into disuse and went back in the fountain of knowledge.

The lectures integrate basic concepts from western pharmacology, the biochemistry of important active ingredients in medicinal plants, as well as their absorption, transport, metabolism, and excretion properties. Principles of administration and drug-herb interactions will be covered in depth.

In Nighantu: Advanced Ayurvedic Herbal Studies, students will also learn:

• To understand the concept of pharma co-dynamics and pharma co-kinetics.
• To understand the therapeutic index, measures of toxicity, and measures of safety and efficacy.
• To become familiar with Nighantu descriptions of over 70 commonly prescribed Ayurvedic Herbs.
• The list of herbs in order of appearance in Bravprakash

Note: If a student is enrolled in the Ayurvedic Practitioner or Advanced Ayurvedic Practitioner Program, the tuition fee for this class is included.
