Spring 2019 – History of Ayurveda: Journey of Significance

In this surprising and valuable course, the serious student of Ayurveda will take a significant journey into the History of Ayurveda and the roots from Aryan, Persian and other unexpected cultural and medical influences. We will look into its origins and its influence in modern day. We explore which of the texts evolved when, and what are the special gifts of Ayurveda to find in each.  Ayurveda, directly translated as the “Science of Life”, is the world’s oldest health care system and continues to be practiced worldwide. Its roots lie in ancient times, the earliest of the Vedas, and its journey spans more than eight thousand years of spoken and recorded history.

The course includes references to rare textbooks, major and minor primary textbooks, the flow of ethnic cultures contributing to what is called Ayurveda, and features:

  • Vedic culture and the development of early Ayurvedic principles
  • Historical Ayurvedic medical texts: contributions, additions, and disparities in thinking between the three main founders, and their students
  • Early common era to Madhav Nidan in the medieval period
  • Ayurveda under the Moghul Empire and the British Raj
  • Ayurveda in Modern Times.

Note: If a student is enrolled in the Ayurvedic Practitioner or Advanced Ayurvedic Practitioner Program, the tuition fee for this class is included.
