Fall 2020 – Ayurvedic Ethnobotany

To many Ethnobotanist, loss of knowledge of plants is a critical problem as the loss of plant diversity itself. But unfortunately, this decline is not limited to one culture or tribe or nation. It is an universal issue related to  Ethnobotany. Also, under the pressure of modernization, wearing a way of traditional knowledge is occurring throughout the world with an alarming rate. Elders themselves often feel sad that younger generation seems uninterested in their own culture and heritage. They look for someone who can preserve the old knowledge before it dies out forever through Ethnobotany knowledge.

Ayurvedic Ethnobotany covers Ethnobotany of Pre-vedic, Vedic, Medieval and British era. For instance, the course discusses how different herbs and plants were used ethnobotanically in these different time spans successfully. In other words, this Ethnobotany class includes references to rare textbooks, major and minor primary textbooks. In addition, the class also covers the flow of ethnic cultures contributing to what is called Ayurveda and its features. In conclusion, Ayurvedic Ethnobotany course covers Ethnobotany from following eras:

  • Pre-vedic India
  • Vedic India
  • Medieval period and Moghul Empire
  • British India
